My paintings describe personal and cultural excavations. Influences include- cosmic events, YouTube anthropology, tokens from indulgent ancestors, haunted childhood nature walks, deities of all varieties, and multi-appendaged animal friends.
I use paint, pastels, found fabrics, and batik. I employ a careful and detailed hand-sewing process, as well as a quick and instinctive use of paint. The use of found fabric lends an outside energetic element. Layers of material and subtractive scraping of the surface suggest the theme of transformation. Symmetrical, totemic forms play with one's sense of recognition. The images are readable to a degree yet expand just outside of a recognizable framework.
These are the major themes of my work; What is to be found when digging in the mud of the subconscious mind? What symbols are knocking around in the pelvic region of our culture? As I continue this excavation, will I find something that is largely personal, hugely universal, or both?
